The Modern Tyres Ulster Rally will partner with Carbon Positive Motorsport for the second year in succession as part of their environmental roadmap.
The Modern Tyres Ulster Rally will build on last year’s 11,000 kg CO2e of carbon offsetting as part of the event's long-term environmental roadmap.
The rally will run on Saturday 17th August, with a revised route format over one day of competition. As the penultimate round of the Irish Rally Championship, the action will be fierce as leading drivers such as Callum Devine, Keith Cronin and Carbon Positive Motorsport ambassador Matt Edwards battle it out over the demanding stages located around Newry.
Matt, who famously won the event in 2021 to seal his record breaking third BRC championship victory, will this year be competing with David Moynihan in their C&M Motorsport Fiesta R2 with their carbon emissions being offset.
Joining the regular Irish Championship drivers to mix up the order is former Mull Rally winner John MacCrone, who will be co driven by Kirsty Riddick in his Viking Offshore backed Ford Fiesta Rally 2. John set a blistering pace last year on Mull before a mechanical retirement, and will no doubt be using the Ulster as a warmup for this year’s Mull rally. Together with the other Viking Offshore sponsored drivers, John is competing with his carbon emissions offset using the Carbon Positive Motorsport Offset Your Season package.
John told us, "I’m really looking forward to competing in the Ulster Rally, especially after the disappointment of retiring at the Argyll Rally. The organisers have put together a cost-effective event, which makes it possible for us to participate. Competing on the same stage as the ITRC regulars in a top-level car has always been a dream of mine, so I’m thrilled to have this opportunity. My main goal is to enjoy the experience, have fun, and increase my competitiveness as the event progresses."
For this year’s Ulster Rally, all organisers’ vehicles will have their emissions offset, with competitors given the option of including carbon offsetting in their entry this year, using the Carbon Positive Motorsport 200% Carbon Offsetting event package.
This provides immediate offsetting for 100% of the carbon footprint of competitors using the package, through verified Carbon Reduction units, and enables a further 100% to be offset in the future, using a Woodland Carbon Code project located at Loch Ness in Scotland.
This world class project was the same one used last year to provide the 11,000 Kg CO2e offsetting level from the event – the equivalent of 66 mature trees, a fitting legacy for the rally's first year of working with carbon offsetting, as it represented more than one tree for each of the finishers and organisers vehicles from the event.
The project not only creates the carbon sink to capture the carbon emissions from the atmosphere, but also improves biodiversity. During a recent project site review by Carbon Positive Motorsport specialist partner, Highland Carbon, the project was confirmed to be on target to meet all carbon capture calculations with an average of 2040 trees per planted hectare, with an average height of 0.8m.
Carbon Positive Motorsport director Steve Smith said, "We are really pleased to be working again with the Ulster Rally. Last year the event exceeded all expectations in its first year of working with us. We would like to thank the organisers and all participating competitors once again for supporting our positive about motorsport initiative this year.
"We have been working behind the scenes for several months now to secure a suitable Northern Irish Carbon Offsetting project for future use and we hope that we will have this in place for next year."
It only costs a little to make a big difference and Carbon Positive Motorsport are delighted to offer competitors and spectators a discount for offsetting their event fuel usage or event travel to the Modern Tyres Ulster Rally using the discount code below.
