Eco Rally Scotland showcases a new sustainable motorsport discipline.
The Scottish Motor Racing Club Eco Rally Scotland showcased a new sustainable motorsport discipline as competitors using electric vehicles fought out a challenging regularity rally in the Scottish Highlands, drawing praise from both competitors and the local community alike.
The event, which is Bridgestone FIA Eco rally Cup candidate event, took place with the events whole carbon footprint being carbon neutral through the use of high integrity certified international carbon reduction units, with the same level of carbon emissions being positively offset in the future using a world class woodland carbon code certified carbon offsetting project located locally in the highlands.
The event ran over two days, starting and finishing in Inverness, and featured the use of vehicle tracking through Rally App Live, which let all competitors verify their times using the tracking app, so that all timing was done by the competitors themselves pushing a button at the timing points.
The event was won by James Hoyles with Iain Tullie, with Andrew Sinclair, Julian May in second place, and Alistair Burgess and Craig Parry completing the podium in third.
Speaking after the event prizegiving, Carbon Positive Motorsport director Paul Glass said – ‘I’ve been greatly impressed by the organisers and competitors’ commitment to this event. My takeaway from the Eco Rally was that from small seeds - big trees can grow!
"Here we see a new type of event which has great potential to build its popularity because of its accessibility, as we see more electric vehicles used in everyday life. These cars were completely standard yet gave competitors a lot of fun – we all know that electric vehicles pack a lot of punch – but when you use them over such distances you really have to drive then with efficiency in mind, and such events also provide the same challenge for the co-driver as in any regularity event.
"I was greatly interested listening to Carlos Funes who was the FIA observer attending the event, when he explained to me how many countries are seeing clusters of such events forming all over the world. We are just preparing our next positive about motorsport blog series to be published over the close season, and for sure this event has given me a lot of new insights to share into how we can all help make motorsport and the environment more sustainable for future generations to enjoy."
